Itinerary

Day 1 :
Arrive in Nairobi
The group arrives at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Participants are met by a representative and transferred to a hotel in Nairobi CBD. Note: Check-in starts at 12:00 PM Accommodation: Eka Hotel Nairobi Meal Plan: Breakfast included
Day 2 :
Trekking from Judmaier (Old Moses Camp) — Likki North Camp
Day 2 of this trek is set aside for acclimatization purposes where you will catch a break from going up the mountain to Shipton’s from Old Moses overnight at Liki North Camp at an altitude of 3990m above sea level. This day will be a moderate hike that will allow you to return to camp earlier than usual around mid-afternoon with a brief afternoon trek higher up the mountain and then a descent. This ensures you follow the proper acclimatization rule of “climb high and sleep low.” Trekking from Judmaier (Old Moses Camp) to Likki North Camp: Change in Elevation: Old Moses Camp (3,340 m) — Likki North Camp (3,990 m) Hiking time: 5 hours Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers Habitat: Moorland Difficulty: Medium Accommodation: Camping at Liki North Camp Meal Plan: Full board
Day 3 :
Trekking from Liki North Camp — Shipton’s Camp
On this third day of your 5-day Mount Kenya trek, we descend into the Liki Valley after a dramatic climb out of the valley that is filled with medieval-like vegetation of giant lobelia and Senecio plants dotted with glacial features on the terrain. This zone offers you the chance to spot some wild animals, among them the Hyrax and sunbirds. Before you get back to camp for the much-needed rest and retire to bed after a long day of trekking you will make a short hike past Mackinders Caves then proceed to Shiptons Camp. By following the acclimatization rule of climbing high and sleeping low, you will make a decent back to camp after going up to 100m. Day 4 :
Trekking from Shipton’s Camp — Point Lenana (4,985m) — Mackinder’s Camp
We leave at 3 am up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing visible part towards lower Hall Tarns arriving at Mount Kenya point Lenana (6km from Shipton Camp) at 6:30 am, after about 3 hours. After taking in the magnificent sunrise, descend to Mintos hut (6km), 2hrs, for breakfast and 20km, 4-5hrs further down to Mount Meru Bandas, 2950m, for dinner and overnight on Mount Kenya. Trekking from Shipton’s Camp to Point Lenana and Descent to Mackinder’s Camp: Change in Elevation: Moir Camp (4,602 m) to Lava Tower (4,630 m) to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) Hiking time: 4-6 hours Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers Habitat: Moorland Difficulty: Medium Accommodation: Camping at Mackinder’s Camp or Met Station Huts Meal Plan: Full board
Day 5 :
Descend from Mackinder’s Camp — Naro Moru Gate — Nairobi
Day 5 marks the last day on Mount Kenya as you continue with the descent traversing the windward side of the mountain. The trail approaches the infamous vertical bog and dips into the dense bamboo and dense rain forest to converge at the park headquarters near the Naromoru gate just in time for a nice bath or shower and lunch at Mountain Rock Lodge which lies at the base of Mount Kenya. We will drive back to Nairobi where you will be dropped by at your hotel or airport. Walk 22km / 6 hours from Mackinder’s Camp (4,300m) to Naro Moru Gate (2,600m) Trekking from Mackinder’s Camp to Naro Moru Gate: Change in Elevation: Mackinder’s Camp (3,960 m) to Naro Moru Gate (4,035 m) Hiking time: 4-5 hours Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers Habitat: Rain Forest Difficulty: Medium Accommodation: Eka Hotel Nairobi Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch included
Day 7 :
Departure Day
Rest in the hotel and transfer to the airport. Note: Hotel check-out is at 11:00 AM. In case you need a late check-out because of an evening flight, there is the option to extend your hotel stay for an extra fee. Meal Plan: Breakfast included.
